Everyone deserves support and respect whatever their identity or background. Today, although there is increased awareness about LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bi, transgender, queer and others) issues, there is also stigma and discrimination.

Anyone can experience a mental health problem but according to Mind, a mental health charity, people who identify as LGBTQ+ are more likely to develop depression, anxiety, low self esteem and more. The reasons are complicated but have mainly to do with the stigma, rejection and social isolation they face from others.

Especially during the COVID pandemic, Stonewall, the LGBTQ+ rights organization, estimates that one in two people who identify as LGBTQ+ experienced depressive symptoms, compared to one in every five of the total adult population (ONS).

Yet, the very act of embracing one’s identity in the face of adversity can have important benefits for one’s wellbeing. Whether it is coming to terms with one’s own identity or coming out to family, friends and colleagues there are many therapists on Feelya who have specifically relevant experience. They can help navigate these unique challenges that other people might not be facing or even understand.
